The worst was in Bergen-Belsen where, four months after liberation, more than 6,000 prisoners were still dying each day at a rate higher than that which prevailed when they entered. The death rates in the camps were not caused by acts of violence committed by guards or overseers. They were caused by overcrowding, hunger, disease and neglect.
